“Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless in facing them.”
Rabindranath Tagore, Fruit-Gathering, poem LXXIX, 1916
Being offloaded is a strange kind of rejection. The visa is real, the ticket is paid for, the family has said goodbye, and then an officer at an Indian airport, or an airline agent at the check-in desk, decides you are not getting on the plane. It feels arbitrary. It usually is not. Most offloadings follow from a small number of questions that the traveller could not answer, and almost all of them can be prepared for at home.

Three checks, not one
A visitor to Dubai passes three separate checks, and any one of them can stop the trip.
- The airline at check-in. Airlines can be fined for flying a passenger who is later refused entry, so they check documents before they issue a boarding pass. Some, including flydubai, require Indian nationals travelling on visit visas to hold an OK to Board clearance before they can check in.
- Indian immigration on departure. The officer is checking that you are leaving lawfully, and in particular that a trip labelled as a visit is not really a journey to work without the protections Indian law requires.
- UAE immigration on arrival. Dubai can ask a visitor about the purpose of the trip, where they will stay and how they will support themselves. A visitor refused entry is sent back, usually on the same airline, at their own cost.
Why Indians get offloaded
There is no published list of reasons, and nobody should claim to know an officer's mind. But the questions asked are consistent, and they all come back to one worry: is this person really visiting, or going to work?
| What you may be asked | What a genuine visitor usually has |
|---|---|
| Why are you going? | A clear, consistent reason: holiday, family, an arranged interview |
| When are you coming back? | A confirmed return ticket within the visa's validity |
| Where will you stay? | A hotel booking, or a host's address and invitation |
| How will you manage for money? | Some cash or a working card for the length of the stay |
| Do you have a job there? | An honest no, or an employment visa if the answer is yes |
The passport matters too. An ECR passport, one that says Emigration Check Required, is issued to Indians who have not passed Class 10. Travelling to the UAE on a visit is lawful for an ECR holder. Going there to work is not, unless the job has been through emigration clearance first. So an ECR holder on a visit visa is often questioned more closely, because the law exists to protect exactly that traveller from being sent abroad to work outside the system. Our guide to checking whether your passport is ECR takes thirty seconds.
What to carry
Keep printed copies as well as the ones on your phone. Batteries die and airport wifi fails at exactly the wrong moment.
- Passport with at least six months' validity from the date of travel.
- The visa, printed, with the name spelled exactly as in the passport.
- A confirmed return ticket inside the visa's validity. A one-way ticket on a visit visa is the most common reason for extra questions.
- Where you will stay: a hotel booking, or your host's invitation with their address and a copy of their Emirates ID.
- Money for the stay: some cash and a card that works abroad. No official amount is published, so carry enough to make the visit believable.
- OK to Board confirmation, if your airline requires it. Check with the airline, not with a friend who flew on a different one last year.
- Travel insurance, which is sensible for any trip and occasionally asked about.
If you are offloaded
It is not a ban and it is not a criminal record. It is a decision that you may not travel today, on this documentation, for this stated reason. Handle it calmly.
- Ask what the reason is and write it down. You need it to fix the problem.
- Speak to the airline about the ticket. Whether any of the fare comes back depends on the fare rules. The visa fee is usually not refunded.
- Fix the specific gap, whether it is a return ticket, an OK to Board clearance or a hotel booking, before you try again.
- If the trip was really for work, stop. The lawful route is an employment visa and, for ECR passport holders, emigration clearance. Our guide to emigration clearance explains how it works.
Where Disha fits, honestly
Our candidates do not travel on visit visas. They travel on employment visas, with the work permit issued before they fly, which means the airport question “do you have a job there?” has a simple, documented answer. We recruit Non-ECR passport holders, and nothing about our route asks you to explain a job away at a counter.
If you are going to Dubai to look for work rather than to visit, read our guides on searching lawfully once you are there and on the visit visa itself first. And if you would rather skip the counter altogether, the UAE roles we recruit for are listed with the employer's terms.
Travelling for work, not a visit?

Frequently asked questions
Why do Indians get offloaded when flying to Dubai on a visit visa?
Usually because the officer or airline is not satisfied that the trip is a genuine visit, most often when there is no return ticket, no place to stay, too little money, or signs the traveller is going to work. ECR passport holders are questioned more closely, because they need emigration clearance to work abroad.
Do I need OK to Board to fly to Dubai from India?
It depends on the airline. flydubai, for example, requires Indian nationals travelling on visit visas from India to hold an OK to Board clearance before check-in. Ask your own airline, because the rules differ between carriers and change over time.
Can an ECR passport holder go to Dubai on a visit visa?
Yes, for a genuine visit. What an ECR holder cannot do is go to work without emigration clearance, so expect more questions about the purpose of the trip, and carry a return ticket and proof of where you will stay.
What documents should I carry for a Dubai visit visa?
A passport valid for six months, the printed visa, a confirmed return ticket, a hotel booking or your host's invitation and Emirates ID copy, money for the stay, travel insurance, and an OK to Board confirmation if your airline requires one.
What happens if I am offloaded at an Indian airport?
You cannot fly that day, but it is not a ban. Note the reason, speak to the airline about the ticket under its fare rules, fix the specific gap and travel again. If the trip was really for work, the lawful answer is an employment visa, not a second attempt.
