Role overview

A Pipe Welder is required for piping on industrial plants, including shutdowns and turnarounds, when a unit is stopped for maintenance. The roles are on oil and gas, petrochemical, power and process sites. AED 2,000 to 4,000 a month, indicative.

Key responsibilities

  • Weld pipe in the 2G and 5G positions on carbon steel, and stainless or alloy pipe where qualified
  • Join pipe to fittings, flanges, valves and branch connections
  • Cut out old pipe sections and prepare the bevel for the replacement spool
  • Weld replacement spools during planned shutdown and turnaround work
  • Work to the welding procedure for each line, including filler and pre-heat
  • Match pipe schedule and diameter with the correct fit-up gap
  • Control interpass temperature on chrome-moly and heavy wall lines
  • Pass radiography (RT) on joints with a low repair rate
  • Mark each joint with your welder stamp or identity as the employer requires
  • Work in tight spaces between existing lines and structures

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of pipe welding experience, including 2G and 5G
  • Experience on a shutdown or turnaround is an advantage
  • ITI Welder or an equivalent trade certificate is preferred. Previous welder qualification test records are an advantage
  • You will sit a practical welding test in the process and position the employer needs before final selection
  • Radiography (RT) or bend testing where the project requires it
  • Able to read pipe isometrics
  • Hot work safety awareness: permits, fire watch, fume control and confined-space rules
  • Valid passport
  • Medically fit for overseas employment

Preferred skills

  • 2G and 5G welding
  • GTAW root pass
  • SMAW fill and cap
  • Chrome-moly pipe
  • Shutdown experience
  • Pipe fit-up
  • RT track record
  • Isometric reading

About the work

2G means the pipe stands upright and you weld around it. 5G means the pipe lies horizontal and fixed, and you weld uphill from the bottom on both sides. You will weld in both positions, with GTAW (TIG, tungsten inert gas) root, SMAW (stick, shielded metal arc) fill and cap, or full GTAW. On a shutdown the work is fast and the dates are fixed. The employer expects steady output without more repairs.

Ideal candidate

You are a pipe welder who can step on to a busy plant and work to a tight shutdown programme. You keep your repair rate low and work well with fitters and inspectors.
