Ten years in India: how to make it count with a foreign employer

An employer in Doha cannot visit your site, call your old supervisor's mobile, or judge a workshop they have never seen. Everything you have built over ten years has to survive being reduced to a page and a test. Candidates lose offers not because the experience is thin but because none of it was made checkable. Here is what translates, what does not, and what to do about the gap.

“When he started the department, there was just some empty lab space with no equipment or people.”

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan on his father's new laboratory in Baroda, autobiographical note for the Nobel Prize, 2009

What his father did next was buy a small centrifuge, fetch blocks of ice from a nearby factory to keep the samples cold, and publish anyway. Experienced candidates usually have far more than an empty room, and they still undersell themselves. A man who has run a fabrication bay for nine years writes "welder" on a form and leaves it there. The work here is unglamorous and specific: state exactly what you have done, in the terms the employer uses, and make every claim something they can check.

What actually crosses the border

Split your ten years into two piles. One pile survives the journey to a foreign employer's desk. The other does not, however real it was.

What you haveDoes it travel?Why
A witnessed test or certificationYesAn inspector can check it
An experience letter on company letterhead, with dates and designationYesIt is a document, not a claim
Salary slips and appointment lettersYesThey corroborate the letter
A licence with a class, or a professional registrationYesIndependently verifiable
Named equipment, codes, software, standardsYesMatches the vacancy's own words
Your reputation locallyNoNobody there can ask
"Ten years of experience"NoIt is a number, not evidence
A supervisor who will vouch on the phoneWeaklyTimezones, language, staff turnover
Work for a company that has closedWeaklyRescue it with slips and photographs

The last two rows are worth acting on today rather than at application time. Collect letters from current and former employers while the people who remember you are still there. A letter you cannot obtain in three years is a decade of work that quietly stops existing.

Say what you did, in their words

The single highest-return change an experienced candidate can make is to rewrite their own description in the vocabulary of the vacancy. This is not exaggeration, it is translation.

  • Welder: not "10 years welding" but the processes, positions, materials and code you have worked to, and the thickness range.
  • Electrician: the voltages, the panel and distribution work, the standard, the safety certification, whether you have worked to a permit-to-work system.
  • Driver: the licence class, vehicle types, tonnage, and whether you have driven to a logged hours regime.
  • Accountant: the accounting package by name, the reporting standard, whether you have handled VAT and in which jurisdiction.
  • Site engineer: project types and values, the drawing and estimation software, the codes you have designed or checked to.
  • Nurse: the specialty, the registration held, the licensing exam status, patient load and unit type.
  • Chef: the cuisine, covers per service, brigade position, and whether you have run a section or a kitchen.
Seniority does not always travel intact, and that is not a demotion. A supervisor in India is frequently hired one rung lower abroad for the first contract, because the employer is buying a known quantity and does not yet have one. Candidates who understand this in advance take the first contract, prove themselves in six months and move up. Candidates who take it as an insult often refuse a good offer and then wait a year for a worse one.

The test resets everything

For trades, a witnessed test is the shortest path from "experienced" to "hired at a good band", because it converts ten unverifiable years into one verifiable fact. Our guide to welding certification sets out how that works for one trade, and the shape is the same for the others: get tested to the standard the destination actually names, by someone independent, and keep the test report as well as the certificate.

For regulated professions the equivalent is licensing, which is slower and should be started early. Nursing and other clinical roles usually require registration, primary source verification of your qualifications, and a licensing examination for the destination's health authority. None of that is quick, and none of it can be compressed by paying an agent more.

Experienced candidates are quoted larger sums, because they can pay them. Seniority changes nothing about what you should ask for: the costs in writing before you pay, itemised rather than bundled, and a receipt naming what each one was for. Costs paid to other parties, such as attestation and the medical, belong on that list separately. A lakh-rupee figure presented as a senior-level processing fee is the shape to refuse.

Paperwork gets easier with a career behind you

Several of the Non-ECR categories are ones an experienced person is more likely to satisfy than a fresher: paying income tax in your own name, holding a professional degree, being registered under the Indian Nursing Council Act, holding a seaman's Continuous Discharge Certificate, or having already spent more than three years abroad. If your passport still carries the endorsement, check the routes before assuming the Class 10 certificate is your only door.

Start the paperwork before an employer is waiting. Attestation and passport reissue run through offices that answer to nobody's timeline, and an experienced candidate who loses an offer usually loses it to a document, not to a younger applicant. The full checklist puts them in order.

Where Disha fits, honestly

Disha Global Workforce recruits candidates with Non-ECR passports and a minimum qualification of 10+2, for the countries we actually serve in the Gulf, Southeast Asia and parts of Europe. We do not recruit for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or Australia. We work under the authorisation of a licensed Recruiting Agent.

For an experienced candidate the useful thing we can do before any application is read your letters and certificates and tell you where the gap between what you have done and what you can prove actually sits. That gap is usually smaller than people fear and closable with one letter or one test.

Send us what you can prove

Photograph your experience letters and certificates. We will tell you what a foreign employer can verify from them and what is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my experience not seem to count for overseas jobs?

Usually because it has not been made checkable. An employer abroad cannot visit your site, call your old supervisor or judge a workshop they have never seen, so what survives is documents: experience letters on letterhead with dates and designation, salary slips, licences, registrations and witnessed test results. "Ten years of experience" is a number rather than evidence, and it is treated as one.

What is the fastest way to raise my band as an experienced tradesman?

A witnessed test to the standard the destination names, taken with an independent inspection body. It converts years that cannot be verified into one fact that can. Keep the test report as well as the certificate, and read the limits recorded on it, because the position, material, thickness and diameter ranges are what an employer actually reads.

My old company has closed. How do I prove I worked there?

Use whatever corroborates the claim: salary slips, the appointment letter, bank credits showing salary, provident fund records, identity cards, and photographs of your own work where the trade allows it. Several weak documents that agree with each other are far better than one assertion. Collect letters from current and former employers now, while the people who remember you are still there.

Will I be hired at a lower grade than I hold in India?

Often for the first contract, because the employer is buying a known quantity and does not have one yet. It is not a judgement on your ability, and candidates who expect it tend to take the offer, prove themselves within months and move up. Refusing a sound first offer on grade alone frequently costs a year and ends in a worse position.

Should I expect to pay more because I am senior?

Ask for the costs in writing before you pay, whatever your seniority, itemised rather than bundled into one figure, with a receipt naming what each payment was for. Costs paid to other parties, such as attestation and the medical, belong on that list separately. A large single figure described as a senior processing fee is the shape to refuse.
