“A voyage to Europe in the summer of 1921 gave me the first opportunity of observing the wonderful blue opalescence of the Mediterranean Sea.”
Sir C V Raman, opening his Nobel Lecture, The Molecular Scattering of Light, 11 December 1930
Raman won the Nobel Prize for something he first noticed on a boat. His first crossing was the beginning of the work, not a reward for having finished it. A first job abroad is the same kind of thing, and it is worth being clear-eyed about what gets you onto the boat. An overseas employer has never met you, cannot check your reputation in your town, and is reading a page. The question is not how to look experienced. It is what evidence you can put on that page instead.

Which roles genuinely take freshers
Be honest with yourself about the list on both sides. An employer hiring a fresher is accepting a training cost, so they do it where training is short, supervision exists, and the work is structured.
| Kind of role | Fresher intake | What they want instead of experience |
|---|---|---|
| Helper and general worker, construction and facilities | Yes | Fitness, a safety card, willingness |
| Warehouse, logistics, packing | Yes | Basic English, a forklift ticket if you have one |
| Housekeeping and facility cleaning, commercial | Yes | Reliability and a clean record |
| Trade assistant, welding, electrical, plumbing | Often | An ITI diploma or trade certificate |
| Kitchen commis and steward | Often | A hotel-management or catering certificate |
| Certified tradesman, welder, electrician, technician | Rarely | A witnessed test, not years |
| Driver, heavy or light vehicle | Rarely | Licence class and conversion, plus experience |
| Nursing and regulated healthcare | No | Registration, licensing exam, usually 1 to 2 years |
| Site engineer, accountant, IT support | Rarely | A degree plus a specific tool or standard |
| Supervisor and foreman | No | Years, by definition |
Notice the middle of that table. The fastest genuine route out of the fresher category is not another year of waiting; it is a certificate that lets you be tested. A welder with a witnessed position test is not a fresher in the employer's eyes even at 22, because the test is the evidence and the test does not care how old you are.
What to build, in order
If you are 20 to 24 and you have decided you want to work abroad, the next two years matter more than any application you send during them.
- Passport first, and check the last page. If it says Emigration Check Required, start the reissue now. There are the routes to Non-ECR, and an ITI diploma is one of them, which a great many trade freshers do not know.
- Get the trade certificate, not the general one. A two-year NCVT or SCVT diploma in a named trade is worth more abroad than a general degree with no trade attached.
- Then get tested. A certificate says you were taught. A witnessed test says you can do it. For welders that is a position test; for electricians, wiring standards and a safety card; for drivers, the licence class.
- Learn functional English, not exam English. Enough to take an instruction, report a problem and ask a question safely. This is what actually gets a fresher promoted in the first year.
- Work a year in India in the same trade if you can. Twelve months of real site work with a letter to prove it moves you out of the fresher column entirely.
- Keep evidence as you go. Photographs of your work, certificates, safety cards, letters. A fresher with a folder beats a fresher with a claim.
What a fresher's application should contain
- A one-page CV whose dates agree with your certificates. Longer is not better and inconsistency reads as dishonesty rather than carelessness.
- The passing certificates, not only the marksheets.
- The trade diploma and any test result, which is the part employers actually read.
- Any safety card or licence, however small it seems.
- A photograph of your own work if the trade allows it. A weld, a board, a finished job. This is unusual and it is remembered.
- An honest statement of what you have not done. Employers hire freshers knowingly. Being caught overstating is worse than being a fresher.
The two mistakes that cost freshers the most
Waiting for experience to arrive on its own. Two years of unrelated work does not make you less of a fresher for a welding job. Two months of certification does.
Taking the first thing offered because it is offered. A first overseas job sets your reference, your trade record and your next employer's opinion of you. A helper role you take deliberately, to get a foot in and be trained, is a good decision. The same role taken in a panic, on a visit visa, from someone who would not show you a contract, is the story behind most of the ruined savings in this industry. Our guide to why the visit-visa offer ruins lives is worth reading before you are in a hurry rather than after.
Where Disha fits, honestly
Disha Global Workforce recruits candidates with Non-ECR passports and a minimum qualification of 10+2, for the countries we actually serve in the Gulf, Southeast Asia and parts of Europe. That 10+2 is a real limit and it means we cannot help every fresher who writes to us, which we would rather say here than after you have spent three weeks on an application.
We also will not pretend that fresher vacancies are abundant when they are not. What we can usefully do is look at what you hold today and tell you which single certificate or test would move you into a column employers are actually hiring from. That is often a short conversation, and it is often worth more than the application.
Not sure what to build first?
Tell us your trade or your degree and what certificates you hold. We will tell you the one thing that would move you out of the fresher column.
Frequently asked questions
Can a fresher get a job abroad with no experience?
Yes, but in specific categories rather than across the board. Helper and general worker roles in construction and facilities, warehouse and logistics work, commercial housekeeping, trade assistant roles and kitchen commis positions do take freshers. Certified trades, driving, nursing and supervisory roles generally do not, because the employer is buying a tested skill or years that a fresher by definition does not have.
What is the fastest way to stop being a fresher?
Get tested, not older. A certificate says you were taught and a witnessed test says you can do the work, and the test does not care about your age. For a welder that is a position test, for an electrician it is wiring standards and a safety card, for a driver it is the licence class. Two months of certification changes an application more than two years of unrelated work.
Do my Class 12 marks matter for an overseas job?
Far less than most candidates fear. Employers abroad screen on trade certificates, witnessed tests, licences and safety cards, because those are what an inspector or a client will check. Marks matter mainly where a qualification threshold exists, such as the 10+2 minimum many agencies apply, or where a regulated profession requires a specific degree.
I have an ITI diploma but did not finish Class 10. Can I still go?
Possibly, and this is missed constantly. A two-year diploma from the National Council for Vocational Training or a State Council for Vocational Training is one of the categories that qualifies you for a Non-ECR passport in its own right, independent of matriculation. Take the original diploma to the Passport Seva Kendra with your reissue application.
Should I take any first job abroad just to get started?
Take a modest role deliberately, to get in and be trained, and that is a sound decision. Do not take one in a panic from someone who will not show you a contract, and never on a visit visa, which is illegal to work on in every Gulf state. Your first overseas job sets your reference and your trade record, so the difference between a chosen first step and a desperate one lasts years.
