“Slowly, O mind, slowly: everything happens in its own time. The gardener may pour a hundred pots of water, but the fruit comes only in its season.”
Kabir, doha (15th century), translated from the Hindi
A driving job in the UAE does not start on the day you land. It starts on the day a UAE licence is in your hand, and that day has its own season. You may have driven a truck or a bus for ten years in India, but you still go through the UAE's own process before you take a vehicle onto the road. Plan for it from the start and it stops being a shock.
Sources: Roads and Transport Authority, Dubai, press release of 20 January 2026, for the 57 countries recognised for exchange; UAE Government portal (u.ae), “Getting a driving licence”, for the minimum ages and licence validity. Checked October 2026. Each emirate’s traffic authority runs its own process, so confirm the steps with the authority where you will live and work.
Why your Indian licence does not carry over
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said in a press release dated 20 January 2026 that it replaced 58,082 foreign driving licences during 2025. Those licences came from 57 countries recognised for exchange with a UAE licence: five Gulf (GCC) countries, 38 European countries, 13 Asian and Latin American countries, and one African country. India is not on that list. The RTA publishes the full list of recognised countries on its website, so you can check it for yourself in a minute.
For a driver from a listed country, exchange is a short, in-person job: an eye test, an application, handing in the original valid licence and paying the fee. With an Indian licence that route is closed. Your Indian licence is not worthless. It is simply not the document that lets you drive there.
One more point on documents. The International Driving Permit is a document for visitors, so do not plan a job around it. An employer needs you licensed in the UAE for the vehicle you will drive.
What you actually have to do
The UAE Government portal says that to get a new driving licence, citizens and residents must take lessons from a registered driving institute and pass all the tests conducted by the local transport authority. The steps run in this order.
- Open a traffic file. You do this at a registered driving centre in the emirate where you live.
- Have an eye test. It is done at an approved centre.
- Complete the required driving classes.
- Pass every test the traffic department sets.
- Collect the licence.
To open the file you will need a copy of your passport, your Emirates ID (the national identity card issued to UAE residents), two photographs, an eye test report, and, if the traffic department requires it, a “No objection” letter from your sponsor. The sponsor is usually your employer.
The vehicle decides the licence
A UAE licence is issued for a category of vehicle, and each category has its own minimum age. A driver who is 19 may be allowed a car but not a lorry. Check your age against the vehicle before you accept a role.
| Vehicle | Minimum age in the UAE | What an employer usually wants to see from India |
|---|---|---|
| Car, van or pick-up (light vehicle) | 18 | A valid Indian licence for light motor vehicles and proof of the years you have driven |
| Heavy truck, tipper, tanker, trailer (heavy vehicle) | 20 | A valid Indian heavy vehicle licence and experience letters for that class |
| Bus and minibus | 21 | A valid Indian passenger vehicle licence and experience on buses |
| Motorcycle | 17 | A valid two-wheeler licence |
The ages in the second column come from the UAE Government portal. The third column is common-sense guidance, not an official list. Each employer sets its own requirements.
Age also affects how long the licence lasts. A new licence is valid for one year if you are under 21 and two years if you are 21 or older. A renewed licence is valid for five years for expatriate residents above 21.
The route without lessons, and its limits
There is one route that some Indian drivers hear about. Gulf News reported in 2023 that the RTA has a scheme called the “Golden Chance”. It lets a driver who holds a valid licence from a country that is not on the exchange list apply for the knowledge test and the road test without attending lessons first. Before it existed, such drivers had to take the lessons and then the tests. Eligibility is checked with the RTA online, and the report describes it for the light motor vehicle category.
- It is a report from 2023. Terms change. Check the RTA’s current terms before you count on it.
- It skips the lessons, not the tests. You still have to pass the knowledge test and the road test set by the authority.
- It is one chance. The report says you get a single attempt this way. After that you take the normal route of lessons and tests.
- It is a Dubai scheme. Do not assume the same option exists in another emirate, or for a heavy vehicle or a bus.
Questions to settle in writing before you travel
How long the process takes, what it costs and how many lessons you need all vary by emirate, driving centre and vehicle class. We do not quote a number here, because any number would be a guess. Ask the employer these questions instead, and get the answers in writing.
- Who arranges the licence and the traffic file?
- Who pays for the classes and the tests?
- What are you paid while you wait for the licence?
- What happens to the job if you fail a test?
- Which vehicle class does the job need? A truck, a trailer and a bus are different licences.
- Is the pay a fixed salary, a basic plus commission, or paid by trips? The answer changes what you actually take home.
Our guide to questions to ask a recruitment agency is a good companion to this list.
On pay, honestly
The headline figure on an advert can hide how the money is made. As examples, here is how three of our own open driver listings stood on 2 October 2026. These are indicative ranges, not an offer.
- Heavy Truck Driver: AED 2,300 to 4,000 a month.
- Trailer Driver: AED 3,000 to 5,000 a month.
- Bus Driver: AED 2,500 to 3,500 a month.
AED means the UAE dirham. Each range is wide, so ask what the offer in your own letter says rather than what the range says.
One light vehicle driver role in our listings pays a basic of AED 800 a month plus commission, so what that driver earns depends on trips. Compare offers on what is fixed. Our page for the light vehicle driver role in the UAE shows the current terms.
The licence wait sits at the front of your first months, so the question about pay while you wait matters as much as the monthly figure. How long the whole visa and travel process takes is covered in our guide to how long the Gulf visa process takes.
Where Disha fits, honestly
Disha Global Workforce recruits candidates aged 20 to 41 with Non-ECR passports and a minimum qualification of 10+2, for the countries we actually serve in the Gulf, Southeast Asia and parts of Europe. We work under the authorisation of a licensed Recruiting Agent.
For drivers, we can tell you which vehicle class a role needs, read your Indian licence and experience letters against it, and ask the employer the licence questions above in writing before you decide. You can see the roles we are working on under driver jobs, and the wider list under UAE jobs. We cannot issue, speed up or influence a UAE licence. Only the traffic authority does that. If we have nothing suitable open, we will say so.
Not sure which licence your job needs?
Send us your licence class and your years of driving. We will tell you honestly which driver roles fit and which questions to put to the employer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive in the UAE on my Indian driving licence?
Do not plan on it. India is not among the 57 countries whose licences Dubai exchanges, and the UAE expects residents to hold a UAE licence for the vehicle they drive. An International Driving Permit is a document for visitors, so it is not a basis for a job. Confirm the rules with the traffic authority of the emirate where you will live.
Can an Indian licence be converted to a UAE licence?
Not by a simple exchange. Dubai swaps foreign licences only from 57 recognised countries, and India is not on that list. A driver from India normally takes the UAE process instead: open a traffic file, have an eye test, complete the classes and pass the tests. Each emirate runs its own process, so confirm the steps locally.
What is the minimum age to drive a heavy vehicle or a bus in the UAE?
According to the UAE Government portal, the minimum age is 20 for heavy vehicles and tractors and 21 for buses. Cars and light vehicles have a lower minimum age, and motorcycles lower still. Check your age against the vehicle class before you accept a driving role, because the job title must match a licence you are old enough to hold.
What is the Golden Chance driving test in Dubai?
Gulf News reported in 2023 that it is a Dubai RTA scheme letting a driver with a valid licence from a country not on the exchange list apply for the knowledge test and the road test without attending lessons first. Eligibility is checked with the RTA online. The terms may have changed since then, so check the RTA directly.
How long is a UAE driving licence valid?
According to the UAE Government portal, a new licence is valid for one year if you are under 21 and two years if you are 21 or older. A renewed licence is valid for five years for expatriate residents above 21. Your own licence will show its exact dates, and the traffic authority can confirm when renewal is due.
This article describes the UAE driving licence process as it stood on 3 October 2026 and is general information, not legal advice. Licensing rules, schemes and fees differ by emirate and change over time, and the salary ranges shown are indicative and not an offer. Confirm the current requirements with the traffic authority and the employer, in writing, before you travel.
